Chief Minister of Goa

Mr. Manohar Gopalakrishnan Prabhu Parrikar has been the Chief Minister of Goa since March 14, 2017. He served as the Defense Minister of India from November 2014 to March 2017. Mr. Parrikar
graduated in metallurgical engineering from IIT Bombay in 1978. He is the first IIT graduate to become the Chief Minister of any Indian state. IIT Bombay awarded Mr. Parrikar with the Distinguished
Alumnus Award in 2001. He was awarded Indian of the Year in politics category in 2012 by CNN-IBN. His political career started in the year 1994, when he became an MLA in the Goa Assembly. He soon
climbed the organisational as well as legislative ladder to become opposition leader in the Goa Assembly in 1999. Mr. Parrikar went on to become the 10th Chief Minister of Goa on October 24, 2000
and continued to be so till 2005. He was re-elected and served another term as Chief Minister from 2012 to 2014. In his earlier stints as the Chief Minister of Goa, he was instrumental in initiating various
social welfare schemes like Dayanand Samajik Suraksha Yojana, which provides financial assistance to senior citizens, the Cyberage Scheme which provides computers to students, Chief Minister Rojgar
Yojana, etc. Mr. Parrikar was invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to join the central government in the Ministry of Defense. Mr. Parrikar’s tenure as (Raksha Mantri) Defense Minister was marked by fast-paced decision-making as the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared a range of projects. He had also pushed for a number of stalled acquisition projects. In 28 months, Mr. Parrikar as (Raksha Mantri) Defense Minister developed excellent relationships with the top brass of the three Services (Army, Navy and Air Force). His efforts significantly enhanced operational capabilities of the forces and boosted their morale. He resigned from the post in March 2017, after the Goa Legislative Assembly election to become Chief Minister of Goa.

He has a comprehensive list of publications to his name. He is the author of 'Contemporary Indian Architecture', 2008; co-author of 'Building Beyond Borders', 1995, and co-editor of 'Round', a
collection of seminal Asian texts on architecture. He is also a founding member of the Modern Asian Architecture Network (MAAN).
